    A wrong order given in front of the reef- the slightest

hesitation- and the boat would be lost,

    "Then it would be all over with me and Martin too!"

    This thought passed through Jurgen's mind one day while they

were out at sea, where his foster-father had been taken suddenly

ill. The fever had seized him. They were only a few oars' strokes from

the reef, and Jurgen sprang from his seat and stood up in the bow.

    "Father-let me come!" he said, and he glanced at Martin and across

the waves; every oar bent with the exertions of the rowers as the

great wave came towards them, and he saw his father's pale face, and

dared not obey the evil impulse that had shot through his brain. The

boat came safely across the reef to land; but the evil thought

remained in his heart, and roused up every little fibre of

bitterness which he remembered between himself and Martin since they

had known each other. But he could not weave the fibres together,

nor did he endeavour to do so. He felt that Martin had robbed him, and

this was enough to make him hate his former friend. Several of the

fishermen saw this, but Martin did not- he remained as obliging and

talkative as ever, in fact he talked rather too much.

    Jurgen's foster-father took to his bed, and it became his

death-bed, for he died a week afterwards; and now Jurgen was heir to

the little house behind the sand-hills. It was small, certainly, but

still it was something, and Martin had nothing of the kind.

    "You will not go to sea again, Jurgen, I suppose," observed one of

the old fishermen. "You will always stay with us now."

    But this was not Jurgen's intention; he wanted to see something of

the world. The eel-breeder of Fjaltring had an uncle at Old Skjagen,

who was a fisherman, but also a prosperous merchant with ships upon

the sea; he was said to be a good old man, and it would not be a bad

thing to enter his service. Old Skjagen lies in the extreme north of

Jutland, as far away from the Hunsby dunes as one can travel in that

country; and this is just what pleased Jurgen, for he did not want

to remain till the wedding of Martin and Else, which would take

place in a week or two.

    The old fisherman said it was foolish to go away, for now that

Jurgen had a home Else would very likely be inclined to take him

instead of Martin.

    Jurgen gave such a vague answer that it was not easy to make out

what he meant- the old man brought Else to him, and she said:

    "You have a home now; you ought to think of that."

    And Jurgen thought of many things.

    The sea has heavy waves, but there are heavier waves in the

human heart. Many thoughts, strong and weak, rushed through Jurgen's

brain, and he said to Else:

    "If Martin had a house like mine, which of us would you rather

have?"

    "But Martin has no house and cannot get one."

    "Suppose he had one?"

`Pretty well, my dear - I hope - pretty well. - I do not know but that the place agrees with her tolerably.'
Mr. John Knightley here asked Emma quietly whether there were any doubts of the air of Randalls.
`Oh! no - none in the least. I never saw Mrs. Weston better in my life - never looking so well. Papa is only speaking his own regret.'
`Very much to the honour of both,' was the handsome reply.
`And do you see her, sir, tolerably often?' asked Isabella in the plaintive tone which just suited her father.
Mr. Woodhouse hesitated. - `Not near so often, my dear, as I could wish.'
`Oh! papa, we have missed seeing them but one entire day since they married. Either in the morning or evening of every day, excepting one, have we seen either Mr. Weston or Mrs. Weston, and generally both, either at Randalls or here - and as you may suppose, Isabella, most frequently here. They are very, very kind in their visits. Mr. Weston is really as kind as herself. Papa, if you speak in that melancholy way, you will be giving Isabella a false idea of us all. Every body must be aware that Miss Taylor must be missed, but every body ought also to be assured that Mr. and Mrs. Weston do really prevent our missing her by any means to the extent we ourselves anticipated - which is the exact truth.'
`Just as it should be,' said Mr. John Knightley, `and just as I hoped it was from your letters. Her wish of shewing you attention could not be doubted, and his being a disengaged and social man makes it all easy. I have been always telling you, my love, that I had no idea of the change being so very material to Hartfield as you apprehended; and now you have Emma's account, I hope you will be satisfied.'
`Why, to be sure,' said Mr. Woodhouse - `yes, certainly - I cannot deny that Mrs. Weston, poor Mrs. Weston, does come and see us pretty often - but then - she is always obliged to go away again.'
`It would be very hard upon Mr. Weston if she did not, papa. - You quite forget poor Mr. Weston.'
`I think, indeed,' said John Knightley pleasantly, `that Mr. Weston has some little claim. You and I, Emma, will venture to take the part of the poor husband. I, being a husband, and you not being a wife, the claims of the man may very likely strike us with equal force. As for Isabella, she has been married long enough to see the convenience of putting all the Mr. Westons aside as much as she can.'
`Me, my love,' cried his wife, hearing and understanding only in part. - `Are you talking about me? - I am sure nobody ought to be, or can be, a greater advocate for matrimony than I am; and if it had not been for the misery of her leaving Hartfield, I should never have thought of Miss Taylor but as the most fortunate woman in the world; and as to slighting Mr. Weston, that excellent Mr. Weston, I think there is nothing he does not deserve. I believe he is one of the very best-tempered men that ever existed. Excepting yourself and your brother, I do not know his equal for temper. I shall never forget his flying Henry's kite for him that very windy day last Easter - and ever since his particular kindness last September twelvemonth in writing that note, at twelve o'clock at night, on purpose to assure me that there was no scarlet fever at Cobham, I have been convinced there could not be a more feeling heart nor a better man in existence. - If any body can deserve him, it must be Miss Taylor.'
`Where is the young man?' said John Knightley. `Has he been here on this occasion - or has he not?'
`He has not been here yet,' replied Emma. `There was a strong expectation of his coming soon after the marriage, but it ended in nothing; and I have not heard him mentioned lately.'

"Jurgen, I have something I want to say to you;

helper in this, for he had grown during the last year, and was quick

at work. He was full of life, and knew how to swim, to tread water,

and to turn over and tumble in the strong tide. They often warned

him to beware of the sharks, which seize the best swimmer, draw him

down, and devour him; but such was not to be Jurgen's fate.

    At a neighbour's house in the dunes there was a boy named

Martin, with whom Jurgen was on very friendly terms, and they both

took service in the same ship to Norway, and also went together to

Holland. They never had a quarrel, but a person can be easily

excited to quarrel when he is naturally hot tempered, for he often

shows it in many ways; and this is just what Jurgen did one day when

they fell out about the merest trifle. They were sitting behind the

cabin door, eating from a delft plate, which they had placed between

them. Jurgen held his pocket-knife in his hand and raised it towards

Martin, and at the same time became ashy pale, and his eyes had an

ugly look. Martin only said, "Ah! ah! you are one of that sort, are

you? Fond of using the knife!"

    The words were scarcely spoken, when Jurgen's hand sank down. He

did not answer a syllable, but went on eating, and afterwards returned

to his work. When they were resting again he walked up to Martin and

said:

    "Hit me in the face! I deserve it. But sometimes I feel as if I

had a pot in me that boils over."

    "There, let the thing rest," replied Martin.

    And after that they were almost better friends than ever; when

afterwards they returned to the dunes and began telling their

adventures, this was told among the rest. Martin said that Jurgen

was certainly passionate, but a good fellow after all.

    They were both young and healthy, well-grown and strong; but

Jurgen was the cleverer of the two.

    In Norway the peasants go into the mountains and take the cattle

there to find pasture. On the west coast of Jutland huts have been

erected among the sand-hills; they are built of pieces of wreck, and

thatched with turf and heather; there are sleeping places round the

walls, and here the fishermen live and sleep during the early

spring. Every fisherman has a female helper, or manager as she is

called, who baits his hooks, prepares warm beer for him when he

comes ashore, and gets the dinner cooked and ready for him by the time

he comes back to the hut tired and hungry. Besides this the managers

bring up the fish from the boats, cut them open, prepare them, and

have generally a great deal to do.

    Jurgen, his father, and several other fishermen and their managers

inhabited the same hut; Martin lived in the next one.

    One of the girls, whose name was Else, had known Jurgen from

childhood; they were glad to see each other, and were of the same

opinion on many points, but in appearance they were entirely opposite;

for he was dark, and she was pale, and fair, and had flaxen hair,

and eyes as blue as the sea in sunshine.

    As they were walking together one day, Jurgen held her hand very

firmly in his, and she said to him:

   "Jurgen, I have something I want to say to you; let me be your

manager, for you are like a brother to me; but Martin, whose

housekeeper I am- he is my lover- but you need not tell this to the

others."

    It seemed to Jurgen as if the loose sand was giving way under

his feet. He did not speak a word, but nodded his head, and that meant

"yes." It was all that was necessary; but he suddenly felt in his

heart that he hated Martin, and the more he thought the more he felt

convinced that Martin had stolen away from him the only being he

ever loved, and that this was Else: he had never thought of Else in

this way before, but now it all became plain to him.

`Part of my lace is gone,' said she, `and I do not know how I am to contrive. I really am a most troublesome companion to you both, but I hope I am not often so ill-equipped. Mr. Elton, I must beg leave to stop at your house, and ask your housekeeper for a bit of ribband or string, or any thing just to keep my boot on.'
Mr. Elton looked all happiness at this proposition; and nothing could exceed his alertness and attention in conducting them into his house and endeavouring to make every thing appear to advantage. The room they were taken into was the one he chiefly occupied, and looking forwards; behind it was another with which it immediately communicated; the door between them was open, and Emma passed into it with the housekeeper to receive her assistance in the most comfortable manner. She was obliged to leave the door ajar as she found it; but she fully intended that Mr. Elton should close it. It was not closed, however, it still remained ajar; but by engaging the housekeeper in incessant conversation, she hoped to make it practicable for him to chuse his own subject in the adjoining room. For ten minutes she could hear nothing but herself. It could be protracted no longer. She was then obliged to be finished, and make her appearance.
The lovers were standing together at one of the windows. It had a most favourable aspect; and, for half a minute, Emma felt the glory of having schemed successfully. But it would not do; he had not come to the point. He had been most agreeable, most delightful; he had told Harriet that he had seen them go by, and had purposely followed them; other little gallantries and allusions had been dropt, but nothing serious.
`Cautious, very cautious,' thought Emma; `he advances inch by inch, and will hazard nothing till he believes himself secure.'
Still, however, though every thing had not been accomplished by her ingenious device, she could not but flatter herself that it had been the occasion of much present enjoyment to both, and must be leading them forward to the great event.
CHAPTER XI
Mr. Elton must now be left to himself. It was no longer in Emma's power to superintend his happiness or quicken his measures. The coming of her sister's family was so very near at hand, that first in anticipation, and then in reality, it became henceforth her prime object of interest; and during the ten days of their stay at Hartfield it was not to be expected - she did not herself expect - that any thing beyond occasional, fortuitous assistance could be afforded by her to the lovers. They might advance rapidly if they would, however; they must advance somehow or other whether they would or no. She hardly wished to have more leisure for them. There are people, who the more you do for them, the less they will do for themselves.
Mr. and Mrs. John Knightley, from having been longer than usual absent from Surry, were exciting of course rather more than the usual interest. Till this year, every long vacation since their marriage had been divided between Hartfield and Donwell Abbey; but all the holidays of this autumn had been given to sea-bathing for the children, and it was therefore many months since they had been seen in a regular way by their Surry connexions, or seen at all by Mr. Woodhouse, who could not be induced to get so far as London, even for poor Isabella's sake; and who consequently was now most nervously and apprehensively happy in forestalling this too short visit.

Source: Greece to get $170 bn bailout, reduce debt

 An EU diplomat says that an agreement has been reached to give Greece euro130 billion ($170 billion) more in bailout loans and bring its debt down to 120.5 percent of GDP by 2020.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the details were still being worked out in the early hours of Tuesday, more than 12 hours after discussions began.
A debt level of 120.5 percent of GDP is considered close to the maximum sustainable amount for Greece.
Greece desperately needs another rescue package if it is to avoid a calamitous default next month when a euro14.5 billion bond issue comes due.

Zetas drug cartel killed rivals, escaped from Mexico prison

 Imprisoned members of the hyper-violent Zetas drug cartel stabbed and bludgeoned 44 members of the rival Gulf cartel to death and then staged a mass escape, apparently with the help of prison authorities, officials in northern Mexico said Monday.
Rodrigo Medina, governor of the northern state of Nuevo Leon, said the prison's director and three other officials have been fired and are under investigation for purportedly helping in the escape. The same was done with 18 prison guards.
"Unfortunately, a group of traitors has set back the work of a lot of good police," Medina told a news conference. "The most important thing is to make sure that the people working on the inside are on the side of the law, and that they not be corrupted and collaborate with the criminals, as the investigations indicate they presumably did."

Medina did not say how the escape was carried out, but he noted that no members of any gang had broken into the prison to spring their colleagues, as has happened at other Mexican prisons. Nor were any firearms smuggled into the facility; all of the deaths apparently occurred with blunt instruments or improvised knives.
Medina confirmed that all 30 escaped inmates were linked to the Zetas cartel, a brutal gang founded by deserters from an elite Mexican military unit.
He did not say what crimes the escaped inmates had been convicted of, but said 25 of the 30 were in the prison on federal charges, which often involve drug trafficking or illegal weapons possession. Medina offered a reward of 10 million pesos (almost $800,000) for information leading the arrest of those involved in the mass escape.
Medina did not say whether the riot and murders were carried out to cover up the jailbreak, but said the mass escape appeared to have been planned, and may have involved help from authorities at a specific point along the prison perimeter, known as Tower Six.
The Zetas and Gulf cartels were allies before splitting in 2010 and they have been fighting turf battles in Monterrey and elsewhere in northeastern Mexico.
Medina repeated a complaint often voiced by governors in northern Mexico, where violent drug cartel suspects are often lodged in state prisons that are overcrowded and don't meet the standards of the country's few maximum-security federal lockups.
"It would be very good for the state if a large number of federal inmates are transferred out, in light of the overcrowding we have," Medina said, noting that a lot of the inmates "are very highly dangerous."
Prison guards in Mexico are vulnerable to corruption; they are poorly paid and in many cases, they and their families are vulnerable to threats because they live in the same poor neighborhoods where the cartels operate.
The prison is located in Apodaca, a part of the Monterrey metropolitan area that is Mexico's third-largest and that has long been the country's symbol of development and prosperity.
All 2,500 inmates in the prison were incarcerated for federal crimes, and as many as 70 percent had yet to be convicted. The inmate population there grew by 1,500 in the last year to 180 percent of capacity, the result of a crackdown on organized crime and drug trafficking in the last year.
Medina said about 60 percent of inmates in local lockups across the state are facing federal charges.
Deadly fights happen periodically in Mexico's prisons as gangs and drug cartels stage jail breaks and battle for control of penitentiaries, often with the involvement of officials. Sunday's riot was one of the deadliest so far.
Thirty-one prisoners died in January during a prison riot in the Gulf coast city of Altamira in Tamaulipas state, which borders Texas. Another fight in a Tamaulipas prison in the border city of Matamoros in October killed 20 inmates and injured 12.
Last July, a riot at a prison in the border city of Juarez killed 17 inmates. Mexican authorities detained the director and four guards over that clash. Surveillance video showed two inmates opening doors to let armed prisoners into a room where the slain victims were reportedly holding a party.
Twenty-three people were killed in a prison riot in Durango city in 2010, and a 2009 riot in Gomez Palacio, another city in the northern Mexican state of Durango, killed 19 people.
More than 47,500 people have been killed in drug-related violence since 2006, when President Felipe Calderon intensified Mexico's crackdown on organized crime.
Families of prisoners protested outside the prison because they couldn't get information on the victims. Only 10 of the dead had been identified by late afternoon.
The Apodaca prison was also the scene of a fire last May that killed 14. Officials then said the blaze could have been caused by a short circuit, not a prisoner uprising.

South Carolina cops seek help in search for missing

A top hotel and restaurant industry lobbyist from South Carolina vanished over the weekend, and local authorities can't rule out foul play.
Tom Sponseller, president and CEO of the South Carolina Hospitality Association, was reported missing on Saturday night by a relative after friends and family tried repeatedly to contact him by phone. Those close to Sponseller said it is highly unusual for him not to answer their calls or contact them.
Foul play is not being ruled out of the investigation, according to a spokeswoman for the Columbia Police Department where the lobbyist’s office is located.
Sponseller, 61, was last seen at work in downtown Columbia around noon on Saturday and his car was still in the vicinity, according to police.
A relative who answered the phone at Sponseller’s home declined to comment, but the missing man's family has set up a Facebook page to help with the search.
Sponseller is a Citadel graduate and a former Air Force officer, according to his biography on the South Carolina Hospitality Association’s website.
He has been lobbying for the state’s hospitality and tourism industry for over twenty years. He is married and has three adult children, all of whom have worked in hospitality, according to the bio.
“Tom has served as President and CEO for nearly 22 years.  He is a prominent hospitality industry leader here in our state as well as nationally," said a spokesman for the lobbying group. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom’s family and friends.”

Police find remains of Ohio girl missing since 1999 in accused rapist's home

Police say the skeleton of a 14-year-old Ohio runaway missing since 1999 has been found after the home where she was last seen was demolished.
The Lima News reports that Lima police on Saturday said the remains of Nicholle Coppler were found in a crawl space as the home's foundation was being dug out. Allen County Coroner Gary Beasley said they were identified through dental records.
The home was owned by Glen Fryer, who had been suspected in Coppler's death. The newspaper reports he was 55 when he killed himself in 2002 while awaiting sentencing for raping a girl.
The home was demolished after the state took possession due to unpaid taxes. Coppler's remains were the only ones found.
"I knew in my heart it was Nicholle," said the girl's mother, Krista Coppler, who now lives Florida. "I knew in my heart she never left that house."
Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin said the discovery means the homicide investigation is reopened. The newspaper reports that police have said Fryer had a link to human trafficking.
"Our goal is still the same: Try to get to the truth," Martin said. "Where exactly that will lead us I cannot say."
Lt. Jim Baker said detectives believe Fryer was involved in the death but that there also were other people. Police said other people knew the girl was in the house, and Lima police Maj. Richard Shade said at least two other people lived in the home with Fryer.
Krista Coppler said she doesn't feel the investigation was handled properly in 1999 but that police have since changed policy on runaways.
"If, in Nicholle's name, she can save some other girls, some good can come out of this," she said.

Former Massachusetts prostitute reportedly free to name well-heeled client soon

The clock is reportedly set to expire later this week on a federal gag order threatening a former Massachusetts prostitute with prison if she reveals the name of a married businessman she tried to extort for $1 million.
The Boston Herald reports that Michelle Robinson, 32, is “making a new life for herself ... in Georgia,” according to the U.S. Probation Office, which will terminate her supervised release Friday barring any last-minute efforts to stop them by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Mark Wolf.
Wolf told probation officials last September he didn’t agree with its decision to free Robinson from the restrictions she was under and was considering ordering her back to Massachusetts for a talk before any decision was reached. Wolf has taken no action since then, despite a heads-up from Probation last month that a deadline was approaching, the newspaper reports.
Robinson, who could not be reached for comment, pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2009. Wolf made federal prosecutors submit a list of everyone who knew the identity of Robinson's client — described in court papers as a 60-something married businessman and philanthropist — and warned officials of contempt charges if they spoke out of turn.
Robinson and the businessman carried on a sex-for-hire relationship between December 2007 and June 2008, authorities said. When he ended the relationship, Williams told him a reporter was offering her $1 million to expose their tawdry tryst. He paid her $280,000 to keep quiet, but when she came back for more, he turned to the law. Robinson is now paying back the $280,000 in payments of $100 per month, the newspaper reports.

Boy survives after being born with heart outside body

A Pennsylvania infant has survived after being born with his heart outside of his body, the Daily Mail reported.
Due to a combination of rare heart defects, Ryan Marquiss was born with only half a heart, which was protruding out of his chest cavity, covered only by a thin membrane.
Doctors told his parents chances of survival were low – most babies with the condition are stillborn or die within three days.  After more than a dozen surgeries however, Ryan pulled through and is about to celebrate his third birthday.
According to the Daily Mail, the doctors discovered the defect, called ectopia cordis, which caused Ryan’s heart to develop outside his body when Ryan’s mother was just 12 weeks pregnant and advised her to terminate the pregnancy, though she and her husband refused.
In addition, Ryan also suffered from hypoplastic right heart syndrome, where only the left side developed properly.
‘We wanted to let nature take its course, so we refused to have the termination,” Ryan’s mother told the Daily Mail.  “We knew it would be a miracle if he survived the birth but we were unwilling to take matters into our own hands.”
“The doctors told us that no baby with Ryan’s combination of defects had ever survived, so the fact that he is here with us today, is just amazing,” she added.  “He really has astounded everyone.”

Google tricks Internet Explorer, foils privacy settings, Microsoft says

Google has secretly been bypassing your privacy settings in Internet Explorer, Microsoft claimed Monday afternoon.

The startling accusation came in a blog post Monday by Dean Hachamovitch, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Internet Explorer. On Friday, a Wall Street Journal investigation revealed that the search and advertising giant was bypassing the privacy settings of millions of people using Apple Safari browsers on iPhones and desktop computers.

“When the IE team heard that Google had bypassed user privacy settings on Safari, we asked ourselves a simple question: is Google circumventing the privacy preferences of Internet Explorer users too?” Hachamovitch wrote.

“We’ve discovered the answer is yes: Google is employing similar methods to get around the default privacy protections in IE and track IE users with cookies."

Google had been using special computer code to trick Apple's Safari Web browser software into letting the company monitor users -- tracking Safari is designed to block by default. When contacted by the Wall Street Journal, Google disabled the code and told Fox News the Journal was distorting its findings.

"The Journal mischaracterizes what happened and why,” a Google spokesman told Fox News. “We used known Safari functionality to provide features that signed-in Google users had enabled. It's important to stress that these advertising cookies do not collect personal information."

Three congressmen called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Google on Friday, in light of a recently signed consent agreement between Google and the FTC governing privacy misrepresentations.

"This ... comes as a major concern, especially just two weeks after Google announced that the company plans to make changes to its privacy policies and terms of service that will allow sharing of users' personal information across its many products," wrote Edward J. Markey (D., Mass.), Joe Barton (R., Texas) and Cliff Stearns (R., Fla.).

Google responded with a statement saying that Microsoft "omitted important information from its blog post," noting that Microsoft's “self-declaration” protocol under which Microsoft asks "websites to represent their privacy practices in machine-readable form" is impractical to comply with and the policy is widely non-operational.

Google further stated that this particular issue has been around since 2002.

Hachamovitch said the technique used to bypass privacy protection in Internet Explorer was different, but the end result was the same.

“We’ve … contacted Google and asked them to commit to honoring … privacy settings for users of all browsers,” he wrote.

Gingrich: Obama is most dangerous president in American history

Tulsa, Okla. - Blasting President Obama the "most dangerous president in modern American history," Newt Gingrich accused the White House of having an attitude towards violent Islamic extremism that puts political correctness above national security.

"Someone was arrested over the weekend for trying to blow up the US Capitol, they happened to be from Morocco," Gingrich said, referring to the FBI arrest of Amine El Khalifi Friday while he was allegedly en route to commit a suicide bombing. "Under the Obama administration's willful dishonesty, it would be highly inappropriate to describe what motivated him, because that would somehow be politically incorrect."

While every website is different, Google has published some heat maps showing the optimal locations. No surprise that the best spots are middle of the page and left hand side. Now I've done really well by placing it on the right, but you should know why you're doing it that way before hand, and be prepared to change it if it doesn't work out.

From the sites that I run, I do really well with the 336 rectangle and 160 skyscraper. My next best performing ad size is the 728 leaderboard, I don't really use the 300 inline rectangle too often. So really it depends on how well you integrate these into your site. Placement can have a dramatic effect on performance.

728 leaderboard works very well if it is just above the end of the "above the fold" area on what would be considered your viewers average resolution/browser window size if there are few other enticing links above the fold. Makes for an interesting layout but if you're building a site for AdSense it may be worth it. We consistently receive very high CTRs from doing this.

Another 'trick' that can increase your CTR is by blending your adsense into your body copy. For example if your body copy is black, remove the adsense border and make the title, text, and URL black. Try changing all of your page hyperlinks to a high contrast color (like dark red or a bold blue) then change the adsense title to the same color.

Another way to increase ad revenue is to use multiple ad units. According to Google's TOS you are allowed to post up to three ad units per page. Similar to standard search results the highest paying ad units will be served first and the lowest being served last. If there is enough of an ad inventory, place all three ad units. However you should pay attention to the payouts. Current assumption is you get 60% of the revenue (on a $0.05 click you get $0.03). So if a click from the third ad unit is only paying between 3 to 5 cents you may want to omit it from your page. This is one are where giving your ad units channels does have value.
